Bon Secours Hampton Roads Health System Launches Cancer Rehabilitation Program
Norfolk, Va. – (November 11, 2016) – Bon Secours Hampton Roads Health System announces a new rehabilitation program now available to all cancer patients. The program was designed to help cancer patients deal with the challenges presented by a cancer diagnosis, both before and after treatment.
“Fighting cancer is hard work, and it can take a toll on a patient’s body and spirit,” said Marylou Anton, RN, MSN, OCN, Administrative Director for Bon Secours Hampton Roads Oncology Services. “The Bon Secours outpatient cancer rehabilitation program can help patients optimize their health and minimize side effects. We emphasize a team approach, working closely with oncology providers to help patients reach their goals.”
Patients participating in the program receive customized treatment plans that address a variety of cancer treatment-related symptoms, including pain, fatigue, joint stiffness, swelling, weakness, balance issues, bowel and bladder dysfunction, numbness, difficulty with speaking or swallowing, and more. These individualized treatments are coordinated around each patient’s chemotherapy, radiation and surgery schedules.
“Our experienced team includes physical, occupational and speech therapists who focus on improving each patient’s quality of life and daily function,” Marne Naas, PT, OCS, MTC, Administrative Director of Rehabilitation Services for Bon Secours Virginia. “We use the most current scientific and clinical evidence to design each patient’s treatment plan.”
Physical therapy has been proven to help alleviate some symptoms related to cancer treatment. In addition, Bon Secours Hampton Roads physical therapists have received specialized training in the unique care of cancer patients. Therapy for cancer rehabilitation is covered by most insurance plans.
