Bon Secours Cancer Institute Opens at Harbour View Medical Plaza

New facility serves western Hampton Roads with improved access to innovative cancer treatments

Bon Secours Hampton Roads Health System has announced that the new Bon Secours Cancer Institute at Bon Secours Harbour View Medical Plaza in Suffolk is open for business. This state-of-the-art facility represents a $20 million investment by Bon Secours to change the way that cancer care is currently delivered in western Hampton Roads, where cancer rates run higher than national and state averages.

Located on the first floor of the 58,000-square-foot, two-story building, the Bon Secours Cancer Institute offers comprehensive cancer services to include radiation oncology and infusion treatments. Bon Secours estimates that more than 8,000 radiation therapy treatments will be provided in the new Cancer Institute each year.

Other features of the Bon Secours Cancer Institute include:

  • External beam radiation therapy provided by a high-tech Varian linear accelerator
  • Advanced brachytherapy services along with high-dose radiation therapy
  • Mobile PET/CT services
  • Chemotherapy services
  • Community education room
  • Cancer resource center

According to the 2014 “Cancer in Virginia” report prepared by several programs and offices in the Virginia Department of Health, including the Virginia Cancer Registry and the Office of Health Statistics, western Hampton Roads residents have some of the highest morbidity and mortality rates related to cancer. In a 2015 article in the American Association for Cancer Research, western Hampton Roads was identified as one of the three colon cancer “hot spots” in the U.S., referring to geographic disparities where residents have the highest mortality rates.

“We are committed to addressing the trend and improving cancer rates for the western Hampton Roads communities with a robust facility and an expert medical team that will offer the latest and most effective cancer treatments in a patient-centric environment,” said Michael K, Kerner, CEO for Bon Secours Hampton Roads Health System.

Kerner added that the Bon Secours Cancer Institute provides a complete destination for cancer patients and their families. “Our vision is to elevate the quality of care as well as increase access to cancer specialists and advanced treatments. The Cancer Institute is designed to impact this region’s health outcomes by bringing all outpatient cancer treatment services together on one campus, which enhances coordination of care and, ultimately, will have an effect on cancer morbidity and mortality rates.”

The floor above the Bon Secours Cancer Institute is now home to Bon Secours Internists of Churchland with additional space for other physician practices. For information about leasing opportunities in the Medical Plaza, call CBRE at 757-490-3300.
